Clubhouse - Montgomery County, MD

Boolean Girl has partnered with Saturday School in Montgomery County to offer MCPS students two hours of FREE classes in coding and robotics on Saturday mornings at Springbrook High School in Silver Spring, Maryland and Paint Branch High School in Burtonsville, MD. Using a micro:bit and MakeCode programming, we combine innovative, hands-on coding and engineering lessons with creativity.

Elementary School: Taking a Tour

In this unit, students will use prior research on a geographic location to design and code an interactive quiz game in Scratch. They will plan visuals, narration, and clickable elements to share facts, then build a game using sequences, conditionals, and events — with optional scoring using variables — that teaches and tests knowledge about their chosen place.

Middle School: micro:bit Smart Communities

In this unit, students explore how people can incorporate computing and technology into their surroundings in a way that is responsive to the needs of their community. Students will program a micro:bit in MakeCode or Python incorporating loops, conditional statements, user inputs, and sensors to create simulations of responsive systems such as traffic flow, urban noise, or lighting. They will then consider a problem in their community and prototype a potential solution.

Additional Information

Children who received micro:bit kits in school as well as newcomers are welcome! If you have a micro:bit, please bring it with you; we will also have kits available for everyone in the class to use.

Thanks to the generous support of the Montgomery County Community Foundation, tuition for the Clubhouse is free to students on free or reduced lunch. All students may join the program, but please take the option to donate to Boolean Girl, a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, so we can continue offering programming that is accessible to all children.
